About Project Silent
What is Project Silent?
Over the years, there were misconception and lack of understanding in the areas of drowning and prevention work. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has work tirelessly over the years since 2002 to develop policies and guidelines for countries to adopt.
We are promoting the drowning prevention message that “Drowning is Silent” across the island. This project idea was inspired by the personal story of Dr John Francis, the Planet Walker.
Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths.

Some countries have started adopting WHO’s recommendations and collecting non-fatal cases along with the fatal cases statistic to study the impact of drowning and how they could design a better intervention plan such as layers of protection.
In Singapore, little attention is placed on this piece of work. Many individuals are not aware of the dangers, the dos and don’ts of water safety and little awareness on drowning prevention. We only have fatal statistic from the Singapore Life Saving Society (SLSS) which published in their annual report with no intervention plan. A newspaper report on the non-fatal cases on children in Singapore by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, which did not cover the whole nation’s statistic of non-fatal. Water safety brochures are not readily available.
The year 2020, AquaFins is celebrating her 15th Anniversary. Drowning prevention and water safety have been the core values in her works. We decide to celebrate by promoting the drowning prevention message that “Drowning is Silent” across the island. This project idea was inspired by the personal story of Dr John Francis, the Planet Walker.
Our Principal, Mr Danny Ong, will cycle to all public swimming complexes and beaches in Singapore. He will conduct public outreach on drowning prevention and water safety, swim 15 laps of survival strokes to celebrate our 15th Anniversary and throughout the outreach journey, he will be silent to symbolise that Drowning is Silent.
We hope this outreach can create a better understanding of Drowning Prevention and Water Safety to our people in Singapore. This journey of education will also raise fund for two (2) adopted charity organisations, AWWA School 2, and SportCares. We encourage everyone to contribute to this cause.
